girl. and welcome everyone to "the real story". the house and senate proposing competing plans as time is running out. who is going first and who is going to blink. day 15 of the government shut down and still no agreement. remember at this hour yesterday? they are wewere going to go and with the president. what happened then? congressman darell issis says republicans are going what they can. >> the speaker is trying to find what is possible in the senate and what is possible in the house. we believe that it is close enough to what is possible in the senate and senate republicans should work to say this is one that we can live with. thankfully ed, you are going to
11:02 am
be trying to parse this down for our viewers. i'm not sure what degree you need to have to explain what the heck is going on. it might not be a bs degree, but the bottom line is there is a lot of talk about what is going on. i think you framed it perfectly at the top. 24 hours ago it looked like both sides were coming together. bottom line is what is new is that house speaker put a new plan on the table today. it would do some of the things that the president wants. it would extend the debt ceiling to early february. but the negatives in the white house's estimation is that there are strings attached in delaying the medical device tax for two years. they say they would consider
11:03 am

she return ared to the house according to investigators 35 minutes later and what she was carrying was gone. the murder weapon has never been found. what is she lying about? should we find out, we will bring that to you right away. as we get more, we will bring it to you live at the news desk. >> so back now to washington, and the duelling budget plans house and senate lawmakers are using to address the budget impasse. i'm sure they are going to agree on this today. i say that tongue and cheek. >> chris? there is that bs degree. >> there it is. there it is. several different meanings forethat. i want the real story here.
11:07 am
chris? where are we in this impasse. where are we today? >> oh, it looks like we are back at square one. calling names on the floor of the senate hurling names at people the president saying he is not going to negotiate or what the meaning of the word is, is. the white house's position is that they are not negotiating. their position is that they are not negotiating. i feel like there are torpedos looking to scuttle the deal that may surface. they are playing along and trying to resolve this. the white house and the democrats feel like it is a win no matter which way it goes. if they don't get what they want the republicans get the blame. that is where we remain today. >> leslie? >> chris, what the president
11:08 am
wants is what the american people want. they want the government to be reopened. they want the debt ceiling to be raised. now regarding negotiation the president has said regarding obama care, although the majority of the american people may not like it, they don't like it being used and held up as bait by the republican. former house speaker pelosi today said why is john boehner and the republicans in the house not the senate doing this? this is hurting the american people and hurting the american economy. this is nothing but bowing down to the tea party god by is not the majority of the republican party. >> you guys didn't agree on one thing and that is why we have the impasse in washington. we have breaking news coming in out of washington.

11:20 am
but i think our nation needs this ceremony today. in moments like this americans like will remind us of what our country can be at it's best a nation of citizens who look out for one another. who meet our obligations for one another not just when it is easy, but especially when it isrd ha. will, you are an example to everyone in this city and to the whole country for the professionalism and patriotism that we should strive for whether we wear a uniform or not. for those who aren't familiar with the story of the battle that led will to be here today i want to take you back to that september morning four years ago. it is around sunrise a colony of afghan soldiers are making their

way up the trail to meet with elders as they reach the village all hell breaks lose. three americans are surrounded and will and the soldiers in the center of the column are pinned down. rocket propelled grenades, mortar, machine gun fire is pouring in from three sides. as he returns fire, will calls for air support but his initial requests are denied will and his team are too close to the village and then he learns that his non commissioned officer west brook has been shot in the next. he makes this way lying on this back he presses a bandage to kenne kenneth's wounds and calls for a medivac trying to keep his buddy calm. the enemy has gotten 20 or 30
11:22 am
meters away and are demanding the americans to surrender. will stops treating kenny long enough to lobby a grenade. and then finally air support arrives. will helps carry kenneth the length of more than two football fields down steep terraces to that helicopter and then in the moment captured to those cameras will leans into say goodbye but more americans and more afghans are still out there, so he jumps behind a ford pickup truck and a marine gets in the passenger seat and they drive that truck straight into the battle. twice they pick up injured afghan soldiers bullets whizzing past them. twice they bring them back. when the truck gives out they
11:23 am
grab a humvee the marine said we weren't going to leave any soldiers behind. finally, a helicopter spolt spo four missing americans after they were trapped so will gets into another humvee and they drive up through the valley exposed once more and when they reach the village he jumps out drawing more fire and dodging more bullets and they reach the americans. will and the others carry them out one by one. they bring their fallen brothers home. scripture tells us the greatest among you shall be your servant. captain will was a leader on that september morning but like all great leaders he was also a servant. to the men he commanded and to the lives he saved to the families of those who gave their

last full measure of devotion on the field. will did things that nobody else would ever do and he did it for the guys and for everybody on the ground to get them out. and that is why after i called will to tell him he would be receiving the medal one of the first things he did was to invite those who fought alongside him. and i would like all of those who served with such valor both army and marines knees sta s pl and be recognized. 11:27 am
grateful for the final day that she was able to spend with her husband. and even now rarely does a month go by when will doesn't check in with her and her three boys. that is the kind of man he is says charlene. so will swenson was there for his barrothers and their famili. as a nation we thank god that he was there for us all. god bless you and all the men that you fought alongside and everything that you have done for us. god bless all our men and women in uniform and with that i would like my military to read the citation please. >> the president of the united
